Seattle Seahawks without key defensive players against the Carolina Panthers - OregonLive

The Seattle Seahawks will try to secure a playoff berth today against the Carolina Panthers, but they will be without four key players on defense.

Defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and cornerback Shaquill Griffin have all been ruled out.

Clowney, who has been dealing with a core muscle injury for the past two weeks, was hit with an illness this week. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday and was a limited participant on Friday before the Seahawks (10-3) ruled him out for Sunday’s game. Clowney is tied for the team lead with three sacks this season.

"He’s been pretty sick,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters Friday.

Ansah, who missed the Seahawks’ 28-12 loss against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14 with a stinger in his neck, was a limited participant all week. Ansah sustained the injury while playing in the Seahawks’ 37-30 win against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13.

Carroll had said that Ansah will be a gametime decision.

“He’s working. He’s working, we’ll see,” Carroll told reporters on Friday. "That’s’ going to go in and take every day all the way to game time for Ziggy. He’s in that same boat as those other guys.”

Losing two of their leading pass rushers isn’t good news for a team that has struggled to pressure quarterbacks all season long, even when Clowney and Ansah have been on the field. The Seahawks have posted 23 sacks, which ranks 30th in the league.

If losing their two key pass rushers wasn’t bad enough, the Seahawks will be without one of their best players on the back end of their defense. Left cornerback Shaquill Griffin did not practice Thursday or Friday while dealing with a hamstring injury. Griffin sustained the injury during the game against the Rams.

Griffin has been playing the best football of his career in 2019. He leads the team and is tied for ninth in the NFL with 13 passes defended.

“He’s got a hamstring thing that just popped up here last week," Carroll told reporters Friday. "It’s bothering him a little bit. We’re just making sure that we’re managing him through it.”

Kendricks, who missed the game against the Rams with a hamstring injury, will miss his second consecutive game. Kendricks had been effective on blitz packages to bolster the pass rush and is tied for the team lead with three sacks. Rookie Cody Barton is expected to make his second consecutive start.

The Seahawks can clinch a playoff berth with a win against the Panthers and a loss by the Rams on Sunday.
