It has been 22 days since Virginia senior Braxton Key injured his wrist late in the Cavaliers’ win over Arizona State.
Key had surgery to repair the injury as soon as he returned to Charlottesville and has been in a cast ever since. So, when will Key return to action?
Tony Bennett said during his radio show on Monday night that Key has returned to practice with a cast on his hand and is beginning to get some work. Clearly Key’s injury was worse than Kihei Clark’s a year ago, when Clark was able to come back and play with a cast immediately.
Word on the street was that UVA had hoped that best-case scenario would have had Key’s return a week ago when the Cavaliers hosted North Carolina. Key was not ready at that point.
The fact that Virginia hasn’t played since due to an exam break has weighed in Key’s favor. He hasn’t had to miss any more games due to the break.
“We hope to have him back sooner rather than later,” Bennett said.
It’s a matter of Key becoming comfortable playing with the cast.
UVA’s next game is Wednesday night (6:30 p.m.) against visiting Stony Brook (ACC Network). The Cavaliers should be able to function well without Key in the lineup should he need more time to recuperate, however he may want to get back to action and see what he can do with the cast in the few games leading up to Christmas break.
