It’s tough to describe a team that’s had so many comebacks as having a lack of urgency.
Yet that’s been a buzzword for the Bruins the past few contests. They’ve fallen behind early but come back often, and entered Saturday having earned at least one point in 13 straight games — the last regulation loss was on Nov. 8 in Detroit.
That streak has been in jeopardy several times, most recently on Thursday when they trailed 3-0 early in the third period against the Blackhawks. The Bruins lost in overtime, but to get there required another dramatic bid late.
A point is a point, though, and results are falling their way, but urgency earlier on in the game might lead to more relaxation later.
“Obviously you don’t want to go down 3-0 in the third period,” Jake DeBrusk said. “Not many teams can say they’ve done what we’ve been doing, especially late in games to come back. It’s not easy to come back in this league no matter what the team is or how they play defensively. I think that everyone is competitive out on the ice and everyone has pride. For us to get a point out of that was pretty special.
“We have to make sure our urgency is there.”
If it had been only the Blackhawks game, that would be one thing, and it’s tough to lump in the Hurricanes contest two days earlier since there was no score until late. But the Bruins had to come back in their three previous games — against the Canadiens, Rangers, and Senators. It’s an obvious trend, and the exciting finishes are fun, but have also exposed a lot of flaws.
Some of that is the nature of being a good team, as well; as the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Bruins are always going to have a target on their backs and face a lot of energy early from their foes.
The Bruins have to match that, or comebacks won’t come so easily as the schedule gets tougher deeper into the season.
“We have to understand that teams that are coming into our building, they know that they don’t want to get beat and they don’t want to start off on the wrong foot,” said DeBrusk. “They want to bring their best and we’re kind of that measuring stick in a way.”
Injury update
Brett Ritchie made his return after being in and out for the last week with an infection issue.
“He’s been working really hard in practice, he looks good,” Cassidy said prior to the game on Saturday. “The good thing about him is it hasn’t been a really serious injury that’s kept him out, but unfortunately not enough reps, so we’re not sure on chemistry. But hopefully this is it and it works itself out because it’s a question we want answered one way or another.”
Patrice Bergeron missed his seventh consecutive contest but the plan is for him to travel on next week’s four-game road trip. He skated in a red non-contact jersey at practice on Friday.
