PLEASANT GROVE — The early basketball season is often an exercise of teams figuring things out, and fortunately for Davis, it figured Pleasant Grove out in securing a 66-48 win on Tuesday.
Leading the way for the Darts was sophomore Rex Sunderland and his game-high 15 points scored, although playing perhaps most pivotal was senior Trevan Leonhardt. Running the point, Leonhardt finished with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, while working to help his team adjust to Pleasant Grove’s zone defense.
“Trevan did a great job and I think a real key for us was how Dylan (Perrenoud) made passes from the high post,” said Davis coach Chad Sims. “It allowed us to get into the paint where in the first half we were shooting 3-point shots the whole time.”
The first half saw Davis storm out to an 11-0 lead before the Vikings rallied big to trail just 13-12 after one quarter. A large factor for the comeback was effective bench play and a switch to a zone defense, which the Darts initially had trouble adjusting to.
That all changed in the second half, with Davis again getting off to a fast start, but this time proving able to sustain it.
“We haven’t seen much zone yet this year, so it was just a case of our kids figuring things out and adjusting,” Sims said. “Once we did, we were able to get shots we were comfortable with and come away with the win.”
The third quarter saw Davis forge a key 11-0 run early to build a 35-27 lead midway through, before entering the fourth quarter up 44-33. Key during the run was the shooting of Sunderland, who scored 10 points in the quarter, including two big 3-pointers.
“He has no fear and he’s ready for the moment, even though he’s just a sophomore,” Sims said. “He has a lot of potential and you saw some of that tonight.”
The Vikings did manage to cut the lead to 46-39 in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but Davis answered with an 11-2 run from there to build a commanding 57-41 lead and then cruise to a key early road win.
“Pleasant Grove is a great team and Randy (McAllister) always does such an amazing job coaching,” Sims said. “He made some great adjustments that threw us off, but that’s what you’re going to get when you go against a coach as good as he is. Fortunately our guys were able to respond.”
Pleasant Grove was led on the night by Kael Mikkelsen and McCaden Adams, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
With the win, Davis improves to 6-0 on the year and will next take on Weber. Pleasant Grove drops to 4-3 with the loss and will look to rebound while playing the Rancho Mirage Invitational right after the Christmas holiday.
