ARLINGTON — Arlington is finding their grove at the right time, and taking down strong competition in the process.
The Spy Ponders (8-1-2) scored three goals in the second period and did not look back in a 5-2 victory over Burlington (10-3-0), extending their unbeaten streak to eight in a Middlesex League crossover contest.
Arlington broke things open in the second, already up 1-0, when senior defenseman Ryan Davies took a wrist shot from the left circle that was redirected home by sophomore Jake Murphy just 1:07 into the frame.
The Spy Ponders would capitalize on the power-play with 7:26 to go in the second, as Brendan Jones fed senior Anthony Messuri at the left circle, who laced a pass across to the right hash for Davies who went bar-down to make it 3-0.
“We made a couple of power play adjustments with it and the kids made a great play,” said Arlington head coach John Messuri.
Just 43 seconds later following another Burlington penalty, Davies (goal, two assists) found senior Tyler Callahan in the low slot, who fired it low to the far side to make it 4-0.
“That was the stretch,” said Messuri. “Both teams are even, they’re a very good team and we just had that one stretch.”
Seniors led the way for Arlington, as the 2020 class combined for two goals and four helpers in the victory.
“It’s that time of the year where the adrenaline for a lot of the players has gone away and the better players start to step up and take control,” coach Messuri said. “I like our better players.”
Burlington would respond on a power play of their own 1:05 later on their first shot of the middle frame, as senior Cam Costa ripped a wrist-shot top shelf, to cut the deficit to three.
The Red Devils would make it 4-2 with 3:59 to go as John Condon banged home a rebound, but Brendan Piggot would notch an empty-netter for the Spy Ponders with under a minute to go to put the game away.
Arlington, who are 6-0-2 in their last eight, opened the scoring just 4:35 into the contest, when Murphy fired a cross-ice pass from the left wing boards to Messuri, who unloaded a catch-and-release wrister against the grain through a screen that found the top-left corner.
